Ostrich cull in BC - Catherine - 05-14-2025

Because of fears of avian flu and entire farm of Ostriches are facing a cull. The owners of the farm have been fighting for their birds in the courts. For a while they were winning, but it looks like the cull  will go ahead.

Some of the birds did die from avian flu, but there have been no new cases for months.  They seem to have developed a flock immunity. The birds are part of a research study with a scientist in Japan. They are not being raised for food. They are on an isolated farm.  They are not being kept in factory farm conditions.

Instead of killing the birds, they should be studying them. The birds have found a way to survive the avian flu.
Maybe they hold a key to producing a vaccine. There is much to be gained by studying the ostriches. Killing them cuts off that possibility.
We can't go back and fix things once the birds are gone.
Bird flu is spreading and it is a danger, but it is spreading in factory farmed chickens. That is what we need to go after, not a flock of healthy Ostriches.
The Ostriches are not being used as food so there is no danger that way. In some places infected chickens have ended up as raw pet food and pets have gotten
bird flu. The decision to kill the birds is a gut level reaction with out much thought.
I still hope they save the birds, but it isn't looking good.

They are still fighting for the birds.

They really are missing the point. The ostriches survived the bird flu.
How and why did they survive. They really need to study them.
I think the key to a vaccine is in this flock of ostriches.
It would be so wrong to waste this opportunity.

The fight goes on. Even the premier is involved.

They need to test these ostriches and find out what is going on. Did some of them have the avian flu and recover. if so, how did they recover.
Did some of the birds not catch it. If so, why now. The birds are worth more to us still alive.

It doesn't look hopeful for the ostriches, but it is not over yet.

https://www.ctvnews.ca/vancouver/article/protesters-opposed-to-agency-ordered-cull-at-bc-ostrich-farm-prepare-for-long-term-stay/

People are still fighting so who knows what will happen.

RE: Ostrich cull in BC - Catherine - 05-22-2025

It is still uncertain what will happen and when.

https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/canada/rcmp-visit-b-c-ostrich-farm-to-prepare-for-potential-cull-enforcement-and-arrests/ar-AA1FdOI7?ocid=msedgdhp&pc=ACTS&cvid=74731bbd544b48a593451308e2a53d5f&ei=77

The food inspection agency is refusing to even reconsider the situation. These birds are not sick any more. That really needs to be studied.

Maybe they could hide the ostriches or move them to a safe location. Something needs to be done.

RE: Ostrich cull in BC - Catherine - 05-28-2025

I don't know how this is going to end. People feel strongly about these birds.

I think the government needs to think this over. There are good reasons for keeping the birds alive.
If they cull to soon, they can't go back and make it right.

And the saga continues.

I am not sure how Dr Oz and RFK Jr got involved. That is a whole different chapter.

It looks like the Canadian government might be involved and the ostriches might be spared.

This is going to get made into a movie, a real drama about saving the ostriches.
The ostriches can play themselves in the movie, so can Dr Oz and RFK Jr.  All other parts are still open.

The saga continues.

I do not know how this is going to turn out.
There is a lot of support for the ostriches.

RE: Ostrich cull in BC - Catherine - 06-06-2025

More thoughts on the ostriches.

https://thetyee.ca/Opinion/2025/06/05/Scientific-Ethical-Case-Sparing-Ostriches/

It just doesn't make sense to kill the ostriches. They are not like a flock of infected chickens.

RE: Ostrich cull in BC - Catherine - 06-21-2025

They have been granted a stay by the Federal Court of Appeal. That pauses the whole cull procedure.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/bc-ostrich-farm-cull-pause-1.7567454

Whether this is the end of it, I don't know. The Federal Court of Appeal is a high level of legal authority in Canada.
I hope it is the end and the ostriches are safe. It would have been so sad to have them die for nothing.
It would have been a lose to scientific research as well.
