Orcas observed grooming each other with kelp - Catherine - 06-24-2025 The Southern resident Orcas have been studied a lot from boats and the shore. Now they are using drone footage to study them. They are seeing new behavior, new to the observer that is. Who knows how long orcas have been grooming each other with kelp. https://www.ctvnews.ca/sci-tech/article/in-a-stunning-first-scientists-discover-orcas-using-tools-to-groom-each-other/ This grooming behavior is considered tool usage. It has been thought that few animals use tools. Maybe we are wrong about that. Maybe it is our observation methods that are not good enough to see certain behavior. We certainly didn't expect to see Orcas grooming each other with something. I am wondering what else we are going to see in the future. |
