UK private members bill to prevent import of mutilated pets - Catherine - 07-07-2025

Many dogs are still mutilated by ear cropping and tail docking. Cats have their claws removed. These are brutal procedures. They are illegal in the UK.
People are getting away with importing already mutilated animals. They also import very young animals and pregnant animals.
This bill would stop that.

The bill  is a big step in preventing animal cruelty and making animals lives better. MP Danny Chambers can be proud of what he has done.
We haven't stopped animal mutilation everywhere, but it is important to take a stand against it whenever possible. This bill does that.

Many countries banned these barbaric mutilations long ago. The USA, I believe, is one place where they are still permitted. What is the situation in Canada, Catherine?

Mutilation is not federally banned in Canada. The practice probably doesn't fall under federal jurisdiction.
It is banned by various provinces, individually. That is how our law works. (or doesn't work)
Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia have full bans on cosmetic surgery.
In British Columbia, Alberta and Quebec, veterinarians are forbidden to practice cosmetic surgeries.
Saskatchewan, Manitoba and British Columbia have banned ear cropping by provincial law.

Ontario has no restrictions.

I wish this was the only problem Ontario has, but we are in a mess. The premier just pushed through a bill that lets them do anything.
Environmental protections will no longer hold up. There is a lot of protesting going on. We do need to fight this.
Sadly the issue of ear cropping and tail docking will get lost in bigger fight. Our premier has been eyeing protected land. He wants to build on it or mine it.
He wants to build a huge 4 story parking garage right on the lakeshore in Toronto. So much for the birds that nest along the lake.
It is one thing after another. He has a majority government so it will be hard to stop him.
He is probably in favour of ear cropping. Better not to mention it right now in case he gets ideas.
It is almost 4 years until the next election. Maybe The veterinary association will step us and ban mutilation.
It  is embarrassing that Canada doesn't have a federal  ban.
