We need wildlife safe compost bins - Catherine - 12-31-2025 Using compost bins for our food waste is a good thing. We should all do it. We also should make sure our bins are secure. Racoons climb into them looking for food. They can get trapped. One unfortunate raccoons was trapped for a number of days in a bin that contained clumping cat litter. He was a mess when they found him. He did recover and was eventually released, but he had a horrible experience. It could have ended badly for him. https://www.saltwire.com/nova-scotia/hope-for-wildlife-asks-for-people-to-secure-green-bins-after-litter-encrusted-raccoon-rescued We have a responsibility to ensure that no animal is injured by our green waste bins. Different bins will require different types securing. Some bins come with locks, but so far the raccoons are able to open them. They also get into our regular garbage if something smells interesting to them. However you do it, please protect wildlife from your garbage. No animal should suffer the distress of being trapped in a bin for days. |
