Rare New Zealand parrot has begun breeding this year - Catherine - 01-11-2026

The Kakapo, a flightless New Zealand parrot has begun breeding this year. It is 4 years since they had a breeding season.
It is hoped that they will have a successful year.
In 1995 when the Kakapo Recovery Program was launched, there were only 51 birds. In 2022, there were 252 birds.
They breed every 2-4 years. There are 83 breeding age females. They have great hopes for this breeding season.
They are still critically endangered, but a successful breeding season could really improve their numbers,

The Kakapo is still at risk of extinction, but their numbers have increased because of the Kakapo Recovery Program.
When we make a conservation effort, we do get results. I  hope that soon I can be posting about how many nests there are and how many chicks.
Go Kakapo Go!
