Trumpeter swans in Ontario - Catherine - 02-22-2026
Trumpeter swans were hunted to extinction in Ontario. In 1984 they were reintroduced with birds from Alaska. They were hatched in Ontario and released in certain places. They are still being tagged and monitored. There are now 3,200 free flying Trumpeter swans in the area.
They are well established and their numbers are increasing.

The Toronto Zoo was one of the release points and the birds there did very well. Over the years I have seen swans on the ponds with cygnets.
Just a week ago when I was at the zoo, I saw three different small flocks of swans flying free. This is definitely a conservation success story.
I don't know what impact they are having on their environment, but once returned to it, they have thrived.
