Hundreds of sharks found dead on Welch beaches - Catherine - 05-28-2026

Dog walkers found nets full of hundreds of dead cat sharks on two different beaches. It is thought that they were part of a fishing catch that was tossed over board because it is not commercially valuable. It is possible they were caught in ghost gear. Hundreds of marine animals die each year because of lost or discarded fishing gear.

There are tons of lost fishing gear in the oceans. The loss of life is tragic. A single net kills hundreds of creatures and many nets are lost each year.
Discarded catches also result in much loss of marine life. Fishing trawlers scoop up everything, but they only keep what they can sell. The rest is not safely released back into the ocean alive. It is cast off dead back into the ocean. All the hundreds of animals that are caught by mistake are treated as garbage.
Whatever happened in Wales has a human cause. It is shocking and it needs to be stopped.
