Texas has a bridge for wildlife and humans - Catherine - 06-27-2026
San Antonio, Texas has built a bridge over a 6 lane highway. It is designed for people and animals. There is enough separation that both can travel undisturbed across the highway. The bridge is in a 311 acre park that is seeking to restore native prairie habitat. The park is named after Phil Hardberger, a former mayor who campaigned on restoring parkland. This particular park is constructed on an old dairy farm. It contains mature oak trees, even one that is 400 years old. The park is 75% restored prairie.

Prairie habitat is very endangered so a project like this is very important. The park and the bridge are a real help to the local wildlife. It provides biodiversity and allows free movement of animals from one area to another. Local wildlife benefits and so do migratory birds. The former mayor was ahead of his time and it is fitting that the park be named after him. We need more parks like this and more mayors like this.
