A zoo in China was in the path of a typhoon and its floodwaters. The zoo locked its animals in their cages and some animals drowned. Many were washed away in the floodwaters.

A reptile breeding facility was aught in the same storm and hundreds of snakes escaped.

It is a serious situation as far as all the animals are concerned.
Animals should not have been caged so that they could drown.
It should not have been possible for so many animals to escape.
The real issue here is preparedness. Neither facility was prepared for the level of disaster they faced.
Extreme weather incidents are becoming the norm. Places that deal with animals need to have safety plans. They need to think over how to keep their animals and the public safe in an emergency.
Other zoos have been caught in weather situations. A zoo in Florida was in the path of a hurricane. They put all their flamingos in a public bathroom, because it was strong enough to protect them. They have built more structures since them. Canadian zoos have generators incase the power fails. Buildings must be kept warm in the winter.
What happened in China was sad. Now they need to make sure it can't happen again.
