Bear interactions in BC - Catherine - 09-27-2026
Squamish BC is having a lot of trouble with Black Bears. One man used a motion activated Halloween decoration to scare the bears away. It worked.
Sadly other bear interactions are not going so well for the bears. A bear that wandered into a store was euthanized.

The bear was able to enter the store because it has automatic doors. The store has lots of good smells and a door that opens when the bear approaches.
That is not really the bear's fault. It was too tempting. The bear didn't actually do anything, but he was killed anyhow.
Humans carry a lot of the fault in a human/bear interaction. We need to adapt how we do things to prevent the problem.
Killing the bear is not fair. There has to be a better way to deal with this. If one man can scare a bear with a Halloween decoration, surely the rest of the people can do better than killing the bear.
