Rescuing pets from Hurricane Dorian
#1
As Hurricane Dorian has swept through, animal shelters have had to scramble to save pets in their care.
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in conjunction with Wings of Rescue evacuated 191 dogs and cats from
South Carolina to Delaware.
The Humane Society of the United States  airlifted 80 dogs and cats from shelters in Florida and 150 dogs and cats from shelters in South Carolina.
Reports from the Humane Society of Grand Bahama say that 74 dogs and 77 cats have safely made it through the storm.
Some of the animals are pets who were boarded at the shelter for safety during the storm. Some of the shelter staff might be homeless now, but the animals are being cared for.

We have come a long way since the days of Hurricane Katrina where people were forced to leave their pets behind.
I don't think that will even be done again. Animals were deliberately removed from the path of the storm before it hit so they could be safe. People's pets were brought to secure shelters to ride out the storm in safety.

I am sure some animal lives were lost and some animals might never be reunited with their owners, but every effort is being made to save the animals and bring them home safely. Animals in need of homes will be adopted from shelters outside of the storm damaged areas.  We have become more caring and better organized.
