Marine life rides Japanese debris to North America
#3
Quote:Yes you are right. The new arrivals will change the shape of everything locally. It's hard to guess what will happen, and the results will probably take some time to appear. All those little creatures were saved by riding on debris. That's one nice thing. But the environmental impact is another thing.
It is nice to think of survivors making it to safety, but the conditions will not be right and anything can happen.
We have a giant science experiment going on and no one knows what the outcome will be. It never seems to go well when species are released in strange environments. In this case it will also be the best and strongest of a species that makes it to North America. We could see a real decline in native species. There could be species that interbreed and that can have a whole new set of problems.

It will be years before we know what is happening.
