Just signed. Thank you for drawing the attention of members to this issue. This annual slaughter is appalling, very cruel and barbaric.

I have rated this thread with five stars to get it maximum attention.

Thank you for posting this Ruth. It is so very sad and dreadful. I signed.

Cliff Richard is a committed Christian, and I hope he will educate himself on what is happening to these poor creatures in the Faroes, and make a stand for the sake of compassion and love.

I just signed the petition. It is an appalling massacre.  It has been going on for over 400 years so think of how many whales died, how much blood has stained their shores.

I do not know much about the Faroes so I looked them up.

If you read down to the whale slaughter it turns out that the whale meat is so contaminated that it is not safe to eat. Only small amounts are recommended. Pregnant women, nursing mothers, women who are thinking about getting pregnant and children are advised to not eat any of the whale meat. The whale meat is linked to various diseases including Parkinson's disease. So if it was a matter of a "cultural" feast, one whale would probably do the whole island since the meat is too dangerous to eat.  The rest of the deaths are another example of a barbaric animal slaughter.

They might try and pass it off as a cultural thing, but if the culture depends of butchering animals is a killing frenzy, they don't really have much of a culture. Maybe they need to look for something a little more meaningful.

The group The Sea Shepherd is working to stop the killing. They have a campaign against it.

Last year was a real struggle.

I do not know what the Sea Shepherds plans are for this year. No doubt they are already talking about it.

Thanks for the information about the whales being polluted - and therefore unsuitable for consumption by vulnerable people. That makes this barbaric slaughter pointless as well as incredibly cruel.

Under the circumstances they cannot claim the whale killing as part of their economy.
They miss the obvious. Whale watching could be part of the economy. They could bring in tourists year after year for whale watching events. This could go on forever. There is no danger of tourists becoming extinct.
