Fort McMurray pets reunited with owners
#1
The worst of the fire has passed Fort McMurray and much has been saved. Now we can breath a sigh of relief for the animals that were in danger.

The RCMP are out there searching for lost animals.

There is some dash cam footage further down the page. It is a sight you would never want to live through. I am amazed anyone survived.

Two airlines, West Jet and Canadian North bent the rules so pets could fly to safety with their owners. That was very kind of them and very understanding. When people and animals are that stressed they need to be physically close to each other.

Hopefully every animal is reunited with its people. Disasters will happen and pets can become separated from their owners. What really matters is reuniting everyone when it is all over.

It has been worrying me. All the pets that must have been left behind because people were not at home when the evacuation started.
I do hope that the survival rate is high.
Although we are not in an area where such a fire is likely, it has made me review our own fire plan. We have solid fuel heating so there is always a fire lit for water heating etc, so it is something we have planned for. I have a large plastic box of wood shavings under the pen and it would take only moments to pop the piggies in. There's also a bag of hay at both the back and front doors. They are part of the normal stock I keep for the piggies, but at least one bag is "stored" beside the doors. They are used up and replaced so it is always fresh. God forbid we should ever have find ourselves in that situation but i hope I'm ready to take the piggies with me.
Greeting from Wales.

This is the web site of the rescue I volunteer at.

I have guinea pig carriers for the piggies. I have plastic containers for the lizards and a whole lot of pillow cases for the snakes. I have a large bin all the snakes in pillow cases could go in. I think I could evacuate in a very short time.  I can also pull the file with my birth certificate in seconds.

It is good to have a plan. Of course many people were at work and had to be evacuated from there in a hurry. The fire moved so fast and was so dangerous.

I am just glad so many animals have been rescued. People really did the best they could

What a devastating thing to happen! I am glad the animals are being cared for and they are being allowed to fly with their owners! I should think so after what everyone has been through! I hope missing animals are found.

It is so important to have a plan in case of fire. I used to have one when Misty lived with me, and was ready in case of an emergency. I always kept essential documents in my bag, and always put it in my room at night, then had a length of rope up there and a spare duvet cover (to push Misty into, tie her in it, then let her out the window on a rope, then climb down the rope myself. I had my boots also in my room, and a jacket.
Now my plan has fizzled out. I need to get it back.

It is good to have a plan for emergencies. Then, if an emergency happens you will just follow the plan and all will be well.
Or at least as well as the situation allows.

At the time of a crisis it is easy to forget really important things.

This situation was worse though. People were away from home and had to be  evacuated as the fire advanced. They couldn't get back to their homes.

I would want someone who is usually home to have my key and be able to rescue my animals if I can't get home.
I would certainly rescue my neighbours cat if anything happened here. I know three of my neighbours have dogs and I could try to rescue them if there was a problem.

It might be good to have a plan that involves other people who would help with a rescue.

I think the people of Fort McMurray did very well given the extreme circumstances.

It is amazing that so many animals have been rescued given the circumstances.
I can only Imagine the joy of finding that in spite of everything your beloved pet is still alive. For some people that is all they have left. You can rebuild a house, but your pet was what made it a home. Getting that pet back is everything.
