Gosh, the event sounds like a good opportunity for guinea pig owners to meet up and show their pets to others!
I do not see why the reporter needed to put in his own personal experiences, as they are not relevant to the event itself. There is a good comment underneath the article by a guinea pig enthusiast.

This sounds like an interesting adventure! I hope you get chance to go there Catherine, some time over the weekend.
A Guinea Pig Picnic....I hope they don't all run away and find exciting things to do under bushes, etc! Or will the Piggies be in cages?
Yes it's not a brilliant idea to take yours if they are not in the mood for it or are overwhelmed by so much going on.

I find rescue guinea pigs never quite get over the trauma. I always have to be careful with my piggies.
I am not sure if the guinea pigs would be in carriers or have some kind of portable pen. I am sure they have planned the whole thing very carefully. I couldn't make it this year, but if they make it an annual event I can plan to have that Sat off.
I bet it was fun. I couldn't find any articles yet, but I am sure there will be something.

That's such a neat idea!! I've never thought of it that way, but little social critters do need outings, too. Maybe they would be in a little pen/enclosure? That way they could run free, but not too free.
Even if your piggies weren't up to the adventure, I'm sure it would be a fun event to just watch!

Guinea pigs are so easy to contain they could set up free standing wire enclosures right on the grass and the piggies would happily munch their way through the event.
I am glad they had a small animal event. So often events are for dogs. Cats sometimes get a fundraiser. This was a piggie party and fund raiser. I hope they have it next year so I can plan to go. Maybe I will even have a piggie that would like an outing.
Mine are all so reserved. They never seem to forget the trauma that brought them to me.

Pens on the grass would be an excellent idea, so long as there was some shade if it was hot.
Yes there are often fundraisers for dogs, and plenty of dogs attend and enoy themselves.
But I can't imagine that cats would generally enjoy anything like that. Their idea of socialisation is very different. There are some exceptions though. I saw a video of a cat who was taken to a 'dog event'! (in harness and lead of course) That cat adored dogs and had a fantastic time meeting and greeting. There appeared to be no mishaps.

Dog fundraisers are a success because dogs have so much fun socializing.
Cat fund raisers involve the owners going out to an evening event and leaving the cats at home.
It is hot, but we have lots of trees for shade in our parks. Guinea pigs probably would enjoy hearing other pigs. They may or may not want to actually meet the other piggies.
I must have been very funny to have so many piggies in one place. It would have been quite a chorus of wheeks and squeaks.
