The Great Pacific Ocean garbage patch a new country?
#1
There is a movement to declare the great Pacific Ocean garbage patch an actual country. There are people like Al Gore who want to become its first citizens.

This is a real movement.

They have ideas for stamps, money and passports.

"Should Trash Isles be formally recognised, it’d be subjected to the same environmental laws governed by the United Nations, meaning the garbage nation would be forced to clean up its act."

It is a bold idea and it sounds half crazy, but it might just be what is needed to change things. As a country it would have status in the United Nations and the united Nations would have jurisdiction over it.
Maybe they could "sell" passports to pay for the cleanup of the island.

We all vaguely want the oceans cleaned up and the plastic removed. This would definitely make the issue front line news and it would give a focus to clean-up efforts.

I would be willing to take out a passport if it could help sort out the problem. Even if all it ever did was create publicity, that would be a start.

This is a related article and I think it should be with this issue.

I hope this can be done. It is a big project, but it needs to be done.
