A new species of elephant
#1
DNA studies on elephants have had surprizing results. They did at one time cross with wooly mammoths. Also the African elephants that live in two different habitats , the forests and the grasslands are in fact two different species. That will have some impact on conservation. The two groups need to be dealt with differently and we now have two species to save.

I not so secretly want the wooly mammoths back so knowing that they crossed with elephants in the past makes them seem not so gone. It is also interesting to think that all this time we missed the obvious about elephants. I wonder if we will make a point of naming them to reflect their separate species status.

If we plan to move elephants for conservation purposes we will need to take their actual species into consideration. The two groups don't interbreed and they need different living conditions.
