Colombian oil spill kills 2400 animals
#1
Six hundred barrels of oil have spread out over an area of 20 km in the Sogamoso river and 24 km in the Lizama river.
Over 2400 animals are dead and 1300 have been rescued. People in the area are receiving treatment too. Trees have also been effected.

It is not clear what caused the spill, perhaps a poorly closed oil well. The oil company is waiting for parts to solve the problem.
It looks like the leak has been allowed to spread. That is a lot of km of contaminated waterways. The contamination will continue to spread if it is not cleaned up and the environmental impact will be felt for years.

It is too easy for companies to drill wells and ship oil. There are no real protections for the environment and no real consequences when something goes wrong. Areas that are damaged by oil spills take generations to recover if ever. Is it worth it for the oil we get?
