There have been advances in cloning. As long as we have DNA we could potentially bring some animals back. This is a list of ten animals that we could bring back now.

Since we hunted most of them to death, it seems to me that we have an obligation to bring them back. Bringing them back could help restore the ecosystems they originally inhabited. Using cloning to reproduce a pet that has died is not the best use of the technology. Using it to fix things we have broken makes sense.
I know not everyone likes this idea, but I think about Mammoths roaming the Canadian tundra and it feels right.
