Humpbacked Whale playing with a log

This is cute. Off the west coast of Vancouver Island they captured a video of a young Humpbacked whale called Lorax, playing with a floating log. He played for about 45 minutes. That is a lot of playing.

So now we know whales play. They are very complex and intelligent creatures. Having a chance to witness the behavior first hand is special. Whoever took the video is really lucky. We were lucky to see the video. Whales are still very much a mystery to us. We are only beginning to understand their behavior and realize that there is much we don't know. It is a tribute to how well we are protecting whales in some areas that Lorax felt safe playing with people around.
