Zambia plans a hippo cull even though animal rights groups are fighting it. The claim of the government is that there are too many hippos and this will help. Scientists disagree and believe that the cull will trigger a population surge that will end up with increasing the population and thereby triggering further culls and an endless cycle of killing.

This is very short sighted behavior. It can do terrible harm to an ecosystem to cull 2000 animals. Scientists are probably right about the result being a population increase. Culls don't actually solve problems. They would do better to work on habitat loss and improving the environment.
The cull is not starting until May. I hope that negative publicity and the work of rights groups are enough to stop it.
