Blind runner and his guide dogs run New York Half Marathon
#1
A blind runner and his three running guide dogs just complete the New York City Half Marathon.
Thomas Panek is CEO and President of Guiding Eyes for the Blind. He was a runner when he lost his sight 25 years ago.
He tried running with human guides, but that is not the same. So in 2015 he created a Running Guides program within the Guiding Eyes organization. Running Guides have the same skills as regular guide dogs.

In this race Panel had three Running Guides. The each ran part of the race with him.

This sounds like a great idea. Dogs love to run and they love to run with people. Having dogs trained to run with a blind person gives that person back their independence and the freedom to run a race again.

I am sure the dogs must love the work. I bet they even like running races.

Congrats to Gus for a career well run. I wish him a happy retirement.
