Whales will be rescued from Russian "Whale Jail"
#1
There are nearly 100 whales being held captive in pens near Vladivostok in Russia. There are 11 Orcas and 87 Belugas. They have been held since the fall and the intent is to sell them to Aquariums and marine parks in China. The conditions are poor and their health is declining. Pressure from animal welfare activists has helped and the Russian government has declared that they should be freed.

This is a life and death drama for the whales. They cannot continue in the holding pens much longer. A future in a marine park is not a real future. It is not okay to just release them. They are far from home. They are separated from family. Some of the babies may no know how to be wild.  Releasing the whales is the right thing to do, but it may take a lot of work to make it happen safely.

There are experts arriving to assess the whales and determine how they can be released. Jean-Michel Cousteau (son of Jacques Cousteau) will be there as part of the assessment team. They have good people working on this. I am hoping the whales can finally be freed. I will post more as soon as I learn something.

Smiley32 The agreement has been signed and the whales will be rescued.
With people like Jean-Michel Cousteau organizing the rescue they will have success. It will take time to prepare the whales and ensure a safe release, but those involved are prepared to do whatever it takes.

As I hear more I will post more. I am so relieved the whales will be released. It has been sad knowing they were there captive in such inhumane conditions.
