Iceland and whaling
#1
In defiance of the international ban on whaling, Iceland resumed killing whales in 2003. Right now they are committed to killing over 2000 whales in the next five years. This is in spite of the fact that it violates international law and there is a declining market for Whale meat. They claim that the hunt is sustainable. The summer whale slaughter in the Faroe Islands is brutal. They kill everything, young whales, old whales, pregnant whales, even baby whales.
That kind of brutal slaughter does not speak well of the people who do the killing.

The whole thing is cruel and violent and it makes no sense. The arguments in favour of killings like this are always economic. The whale slaughter is considered profitable for the country. It brought in 1.41 billion Kronur.

Whale watching brought in 3.2 billion Kronur.

Why would people cling to a brutal senseless slaughter. It serves no purpose and it does not actually benefit them.
