Six horses die in 2019 Calgary Stampede
#1
For the second time this year a horse had to be euthanized at the Calgary Stampede. In both cases it was during the Chuckwagon races.

The Chuckwagon races have quite a history of horse deaths.

This is clearly not a safe  sport.
It is very popular however.

Horse deaths have become a "normal" part of the chuckwagon races. It is so common to have horse die that it is barely reported. People expect some deaths so they don't react when it happens. The race itself is very dangerous. A horse race or a wagon race have their dangers, but the chuckwagon races have wagons and riders on horses on the track at the same time. If one horse or one wagon goes down there will be many animals that are injured.
I know the races are part of a long tradition and people enjoy them, but there are too many deaths to justify that kind of entertainment.

Is there any other entertainment that you would attend where you accept the fact that some of the performers could be killed.

Yet another horse has died.

How many horses have to die before they say enough with the chuckwagon races. It just goes on year after year with more horse dying each time. The horses deserve better.

It seems like another example of people becoming de-sensitised to something which they should find disturbing.

It seems we can have that tendency.

The poor horses. Again -animals die for humans' sport.

Yet another horse was injured on Friday.

https://globalnews.ca/news/5491029/horse...ce-friday/

This horse was lucky and it wasn't killed. Over the years over 100 horses have not been so lucky.

You are right, we should be disturbed by this. One horse death should have shut down the whole chuckwagon races.
Not even one race has been cancelled. The only response has been to ban one driver who was considered to be responsible for Thursday's horse death. He may have been responsible for that actual incident, but the races themselves are prone to accidents that are fatal to horses. This goes on year after year.

We really should question what we consider entertainment. Why do we like to watch "sports" where animals get killed?

I was shocked when a second horse died. Then there was a third horse death. With the Stampede ending Sunday night, it looked like that was it. Then three more horses died in the Chuckwagon Races. That makes six horses who died in the chuckwagon races this year. That is six to many.

The chuckwagon races have a history of causing horse deaths. This is not the first year where six horses have died.
This is not a safe race. Year after year horses die. If they can't make it safe, then they should stop this carnage. No more horses should die for people's entertainment.
