Grand Bahamas Animal Shelter update
#1
The news out of the Bahamas is sad on so many levels.  The Humane Society of the Grand Bahamas had a well built shelter. They even boarded pets of people who had to be evacuated. Sadly during Hurricane Dorian they were hit with a 20 ft storm surge. Nothing prepared them for the intensity of what happened. The shelter rapidly filled with water. None of the staff were killed, but 113 animals were killed. Some of them were people's pets who were riding out the storm in the safety of the shelter. The only good news is that more than 150 cats and dogs made it.

No one was ready for the extreme destruction of a storm like this. The winds did so much damage. A twenty foot storm surge is unthinkable. I am 5 ft tall. The surge was 4 times my height. Sad as the loss of life is, it is remarkable that any of the animals survived.  Now they need to be evacuated to Florida or other places and the shelter needs to repair its building.

I am sure we are going to continue to hear stories of survival and stories of losses. I can't imagine what it is like for people and pets caught in this disaster. I just hope they can rescue as many pets as possible.

I feel for the people  who tried to keep the shelter safe during hurricane Dorian. They did everything they could nd they did risk their lives. The storm was just more than they could handle.

In spite of what they went through and all that was lost the staff went back to caring for the animals that survived.
That is dedication and courage and you have to admire what they did for the animals.
