Animals in the California wildfires
#1
As wildfires rage through California people have had to flee. Sometimes they can take their pets and sometimes they cannot return home to get them. Fires move fast. It is not just household pets in danger, it is also farm animals and wildlife.  As the disaster unfolds, it is not clear which animals have been saved and which have been lost. People are doing their best to save animals in danger. Then they will do their best to reunite the animals with their people.

This is really sad and you might not want to look at the pictures.

Fire is so destructive and animals are so vulnerable.
Every year we hear heartbreaking stories of animals lost.
I don't know what the solution is, but I know it needs to start long before the fire does.

Yes there has to be an evacuation plan which includes animals. I can imagine it would be much much harder with a herd of cows or a flock of sheep, but how impossible? Even if those animals had to be confined after evacuation for a while it is better than being burned alive !

As for dogs, cats and other companion animals, it should be easy !! More temporary accommodation places should be willing to help evacuees keep their animals with them !

I would have just grabbed Misty, grabbed a tent (literally), a back-pack and got the heck out.

You would not have waited until the last minute. You would have left in plenty of time to be safe.

Wildfires can happen suddenly and move quickly. People can be trapped away from their pets. I think during fire season I would want to take my pets with me everywhere. I would also want some fire safety supplies. There are things like fire tents that could  keep a person and their pets alive.

This is a new design that looks promising.

Why couldn't something be designed to protect people and their animals if they are trapped.

Why couldn't a more permanent fire shelter area be built into a home in an area that is at risk for wildfires.
These fires happen year after year and we keep talking about how terrible it is.  It is going to happen again next year. Now is the time to think of new ways to be safe when next year's fires come. Maybe all properties need to be assessed for wildfire safety.
Fire breaks and perhaps less flammable building materials could help. Since wildfires will continue and get worse as a result of climate change we need to find ways to protect  ourselves and our animals.
