Two Orca calves born in BC waters
#1
There are now two health orca calves in the southern resident orca pod off of the west coast of British Colombia. The past few years have been very bad for the pod. They have suffered miscarriages, calf deaths and the deaths of many adults Their population is down to 73 members.  The have had to stop feeding  in the Salish Sea. The salmon stocks are so depleted that they have had to seek food elsewhere. They are also battling pollution and excessive noise in the water. The decline of the orcas and their need to feed elsewhere in a sign that the coastal waters and in particular the salmon are in serious trouble.
Whether these two healthy calves will be enough to keep the pod going or whether it will continue to decline, that remains to be seen.

I am happy to hear that the J pod has finally had some healthy births. It has been so sad to hear of calf deaths and miscarriages over the past few years. They have had a lot of sadness. Now at last they have a reason to be happy. There is such a fear that we are watching the extinction of the southern resident orcas. Even with the new calves it still might be to late for them to survive.  I like to be hopeful.  It is just too sad to think of there being no orcas in the coastal waters.  Of course our oceans are in trouble and this is just another sign of how much trouble. We do need to take this seriously so the two new calves have a place where they can survive.
