Edmonton feral cat problem
#1
Edmonton Alberta has a serious feral cat problem. It is estimated that there are 63,000 feral cats. The city's Animal Care and Control Centre is unable to keep up with the problem. They have initiated the Trap Neuter Return program, but they were only able to deal with 600 cats in one year. That is not enough. At the rate cats multiply they are not even holding the  numbers steady.

It has been proposed that they adopt the same model as Toronto. A number of concerned groups have come together to form the Toronto Feral Cat Coalition. The group includes The Toronto Humane Society, Toronto Animal Services, Annex Cat Rescue, Toronto Street Cats and a number of other groups. It is working in Toronto because they have enough people and they have the resources of the larger groups.

It is working in Toronto. The number of feral cats is dropping. There are fewer colonies and some large colonies have died out.
Whenever possible,  cats  are rescued and placed in homes.  The cats that are still out there are better cared for. They are vaccinated, fed and have warm shelters to sleep in.

Edmonton needs to adopt Toronto's model. Perhaps they could arrange for a workshop to teach people how to do this.
It is not an instant solution to the feral cat crisis, but over time it is an effective and humane solution.
