Bald eagles poisoned by euthanized pig carcass
#1
A number of bald eagles on Vancouver Island have been brought in to a vet clinic after they ate the carcass of a pig that was euthanized. When an animal is euthanized the body is full of drugs that can kill. This pig was dumped at a landfill site and was not buried so the eagles had easy access to it.  Vets are fighting desperately  to save the eagles, but not all will make it.

This is not the first time this has happened and eagles have died before. All they were doing was eating what seemed to be a good meal. Instead they were effected by the drugs that were used to euthanize the animal. This is an issue that needs to be addressed everywhere.
When animals are euthanized the body must be disposed of safely. Just dumping it is not good enough. Even deep burial has problems. The body will break down, but what about the medication.  Will it be released into the environment.

There have been cases of dog food contaminated with the bodies of euthanized animals, with the expected fatal results.
When animals are euthanized, there must be a safe plan to dispose of the body. I don't know who is ultimately responsible for this, but for now I think whoever administers the drugs needs to question what will be done with the body. It is not okay to kill wildlife with animals we have chosen to kill humanely no matter why we have chosen to kill an animal.
