cruelty to veal calves
#1
I find this very upsetting, especially since this is Canada, my country.

I have never looked into the veal industry. Now that I have, I am shocked. The whole system is inherently cruel.

There is a petition:

There is talk of change by 2018. What about the calves that live like that now?Angry

Just signed. To be honest, this sort of treatment in veal production is almost the worst I have seen. Calves used to kept in dark, confined conditions in France until this was recently banned, but even then they had more a bit more movement than is offered by these appalling cages. Let us hope the people of Canada will rally round to have this terrible practice stopped.

We have pockets of animal cruelty. The veal industry is not right across the country. In some ways it makes it harder to regulate. How do you get people worked up enough to demand change for something that does not happen in their area. Out of sight, out of mind. Quebec does have it's own rules and the Federal Government treads softly when dealing with them. (It is a complicated situation)

I think even people raising veal calves were shocked by the video. I hope that translates into action!
I hope the people who eat veal see this and reject eating veal and further sustaining the whole thing.

We need a serious change of farming rules and we need to screen farm employees better. Some people should not be working around animals.Angry

It has got people talking here in Toronto and I do think there is some work being done to change the laws in Quebec. It helps that they just had an election and a change of government.

The Mercy For Animals group needs to keep the story in the public eye. It helps that they just did a chicken hatchery exposé. The more you unsettle people the better.

I think veal is not such a mainstay of our diet so the whole industry could collapse and that would end the systematic cruelty. If a few small farms raised veal as a specialty item, they would not want to be linked to cruel practices and so things would have to be different. I have never liked the idea of veal. The whole idea of eating babies seems creepy.Smiley13
