Monarch Migration time
#1
Monarch butterflies spend their winters in Mexico and their summers as far north as Canada. Each year we wait for the migration to begin to see how well they have survived the winter.  This year the number seems to be way down for the Eastern Butterfly population. That is alarming. Loss of habitat is a factor. So is pesticide use. There is always the fear that the migration numbers will be too low and the butterflies will not make it.

It is early yet and it is too soon to be sure, but this is a poor start to the migration. It would be so sad if the butterflies decline. So  many of us are working hard to plant milkweed so there is somewhere for their eggs and a place for the caterpillars to feed. In some ways the Monarchs symbolize North American conservation efforts.

The migration is a fascinating event.

It is still cold and my milkweed is barely starting to grow. However, by the time the monarchs arrive my garden will be is full swing.
I just hope that many butterflies make it all the way to Canada. We will be waiting fort them.
