White Throated Sparrows are singing a new song
#1
White throated Sparrows live in Canada and winter in the USA. Mostly they have lived east of the Rockies, but a population of sparrows settled in west of the Rockies. The western sparrows came up with a new song. During the winter sparrows from both populations mingled and the eastern sparrows picked up the new song and now it has spread across the country. All white throated sparrows except for sparrows on the extreme eastern end of the range are singing the new song.

Now there is an even newer song on the west coast and it is starting to spread.

The sparrows are just like us. We all play the same popular songs until a new one comes along and then we play that one.
It is interesting to see how the birds learn songs from each other and how they are passed on. I wonder now which bird is the one who created the new song.
Someone must have started it. Are there birds that are more musical and experiment with sounds and when they get a good sound other birds like it an copy it.

Birds are more complex than we realize.
