Deer cull cancelled when activists propose relocation.
#1
The  Quebec city of  Longueuil decided to reduce its deer population by killing half its deer. Fifteen animals would have died. The efforts of animal  rights activists have convinced the city to let the deer be relocated instead. The activists will capture and relocate the deer to sanctuaries in the area. They will be properly quarantined and given health checks. The remaining deer will be given contraception to prevent future over population problems and they will be treated to prevent Lyme Disease.

This is a total win-win situation. The deer that will be removed will live out their lives in suitable locations. They will be healthy and have everything they need.
The remaining deer will be able to live out their lives in their home park. They will have what they need to be healthy and safe. It is the ideal solution. It is humane and it will work.  Culls are an animal slaughter that is cruel and does not work. With in a few years the numbers will have increased again and there would need to be another cull.  Removing some deer and preventing the remaining deer from repopulating is a humane long term solution.

It is good to see that some cities can respond reasonably when given an alternative to a cull. I hope word of this spreads and other places look for alternatives to culls. Culls may seem like a quick solution, but they are not really the answer in the long term.

Yes, a very humane solution, which thinks "outside the box" for a change!

There have been other relocations instead of culls. I think it was Canada Geese that were relocated.
The thinking outside the box has to come from the animal rights activists. If there is enough negative publicity for the cull and a good solid humane solution presented, cities can be persuaded to change their minds.
