Alex the African Grey Parrot, a pioneer in bird intelligence studies.
#1
Alex the African Grey Parrot became part of an avian learning experiment in June of 1977.
He learned language and he even learned to ask his own questions.  Alex opened researchers eyes to the possibilities of avian intelligence.
Birds were not considered intelligent until they studied Alex. His work opened the door for other birds to be studied.
Sadly he died suddenly on Sept 6, 2007 at the age of 31. His contributions to the understanding of animal intelligence were invaluable. Future studies build on his work.

Many thanks to Alex for working with researchers so diligently. We understand so much more because of Alex.
Also some of the techniques used to work with Alex have proved helpful when teaching children with learning disabilities.
Thank-you Alex.
