Drone crashes into tern nesting area, 3000 eggs abandoned
#1
It is the peak of nesting season and a California beach was covered in nesting terns. The area is an ecological reserve so it is off limits to drones. However someone crashed a drone right into the nesting area. The birds were frightened into abandoning their nests. Now there are 3000 abandoned eggs. Instead of thousands of tern chicks, the beach is littered with broken shells.

This is a serious loss for the tern population in the area. Instead of losing a few chicks, they have lost all the chicks for this year.  It is a sad loss of bird life and one that could have consequences for the terns.  This could effect the population numbers in the area. When this year's terns reach breeding age there will be a drop in the number of birds ready to breed because so many were lost. Drones can have their uses and they can be very helpful. Flying a drone over a bird nesting area is illegal for a reason. A drone is likely to disturb some of the birds. Having the drone crash has disturbed all the birds. Perhaps it should require a license to fly a drone. It is too easy for an irresponsible person to do serious damage. Even if they fine the drone owner, it doesn't replace the lost chicks.
