Magawa, the bomb sniffing rat, retires.
#1
Magawa is an African giant pouched rat. He has been trained by APOPO to find land mines and unexploded shells.

He has had an incredible career. For the last five years he has worked and cleared 141,000 square meters of land by finding 71 land mines and 38 other unexploded weapons.  He was given a British award for animal bravery last year. Usually the award is won by dogs.

He is still in good shape, but it is time for him to retire. He has done his job and done it well.

I am sure he will be missed on the job, but he deserves his rest. What he did was amazing. Many people are injured by landmines years after the conflicts that put the landmines in place. It is hard to remove them safely. Rats are able to find the mines without triggering them. Then they can be safely removed.
Magawa is just one little rat, but he saved many people and other animals from injury or death. He really is a Hero Rat.
