RSPB, celebrating a 100 year old victory
#1
The RSPB is the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. One hundred years ago they fought against the use of exotic bird feathers in ladies hats. The use of feathers from birds like egrets, ostriches and flamingos was driving them to extinction. Their victory, the Plumage Act banned the importation and use of such feathers in hats. They saved these species from extinction.

Now the RSPB is fighting other conservation battles in order to save local birds. This time they are fighting against pollution, pesticides, habitat loss, intensive farming and of course climate change because of global warming. The battle is more complex and it is not so clear when a victory has been won.
They did learn an important lesson from the Plumage Act. Clear cut laws are more effective. They are pushing for clear goals in the future environmental act.
I hope there history of success continues into the future.
