Joaquin Phoenix saves cow and calf from a slaughterhouse

The day after Joaquin Phoenix spoke about animal rights at the Oscars, he encountered a situation at a slaughterhouse. A cow had just given birth after she arrived by truck. She was separated from the other cows with her calf. Joaquin spoke with the owner of the slaughterhouse and arranged to have the cow and her calf  transported to Farm Sanctuary near Los Angeles. They are now living together safely where they will be cared for and allowed to live out their lives.

It is good to know that Joaquin's speech is followed up by actions. It does make me wonder what happens to cows who give birth in transit to a slaughterhouse. What happens to the calves? Do they not check for pregnancy before they ship a cow? Things ended well for Liberty and Indigo. What about all the other cows that end up in the same situation, but have no one to help them?
