Attempts being made to free two entangled Right Whales
#1
North Atlantic Right Whales are very endangered and they are carefully tracked. Two have been found to be entangled in discarded fishing gear.
One is the 16 year old female, Snow Cone. Her condition is of great concern because there are so few females left. Some of the line has been removed, but she still needs help.  The other whale is a 5 year old male, as yet un-named. They think some of the line has come off already, but they are working on totally freeing him.

Two things. First, you have to admire the people who are out there actually working with the whales. That is a serious commitment to the survival of the species.
Second, why is there so much discarded fishing gear in the oceans? Who loses all these ropes. Why can't they be held responsible for the harm these ropes do.
It must be very distressing for a whale to be tangled in ropes and have no way of freeing itself.  These ropes are a form of littering.  Maybe there needs to be a serious fine for "littering" in the ocean. They could get them with an animal cruelty charge too.
I  hope they are able to free these two whales. Their whole species needs them.
