The Puffin and Petrel Patrol
#1
Every year for the last 17 years volunteers have been helping Puffins and Petrels. The fledgling birds come out of their tunnels and using the moon and stars  to guide them, they make their way to the ocean. Sadly there is so much light pollution that birds get lost and head inland instead. The volunteers go out in the early evening and find them. Petrels are nocturnal so they can be released right away. Puffins are held until morning and then released.
The program was started by one couple in 2004, but  2011 they partnered with the Canadian Parks and wilderness Society. Since then they have rescued and released over 4000 birds.

I never even dreamed that this was going on. Year after year people are out there each evening in the summer to search for and  rescue lost Puffins and Petrels.
There are many bad things out there that get in the news. All this time this amazing rescue was going on and we didn't hear about it. We know about it now and we can be glad that people are working to help birds that are in trouble. Of course they are in trouble because of our light pollution.
Well done to the rescuers. I hope they have a good year of rescuing and all the lost fledglings make it to the sea.
