Hoping Nowzad Animal Rescue in Kabul is okay...
#11
It was a diplomatic car! That says it all, really.

The vacillating attitude of the UK Govt is hard to understand. We are talking about a privately funded charter flight, which will take more people than otherwise possible. There is no downside.

As I said previously, Wallace should spend his time checking on the backgrounds of those being transported, not labelling privately funded rescue efforts as "bol..cks". Animals pose no security threat at all and do not stab or shoot guns. A few very dangerous persons have been found amongst those seeking to get out. One person, in France, was rescued but put under surveillance because of security concerns. The response? He left the area and dodged surveillance. He has been caught again, but the risk is there. The animals pose no risk at all!

This is not a good news situation.  There is another animal rescue in the same danger as Nowzad.  It don't know if they have any chance of escape.
I don't think they are too hopeful.

This is the most recent article I could find about Pen Farthing.  I know as I post this the situation has already changed. It is Friday, early morning in Afghanistan and anything could have happened.

I keep hoping for good news and fearing the worst.

It was a diplomatic car. It could be replaced. This how many people could have taken its place. Think how many people could ride in the same privately chartered plane as the animals. The animals wouldn't be taking people's places. The animals would be creating places for people.

I don't suppose it is possible to screen everyone properly in a mass evacuation like this. A better screening would need to be done once people are safely evacuated. The animals of course are perfectly fine. They just need to be quarantined and there are people prepared to do that so the animals are no danger to anyone.

Let's hope the next thing we hear is good news.

I am going to add this article. I don't know if it is good or bad news.

If they can get the plane there and they can reach the airport, this rescue is possible.

This has not ended well. See:

If the Tory Defence Secretary, Wallace, had approved the private charter flight more quickly, they could all have been safely in the UK by now. Now, it is too late. I do not blame Biden, as he gave notice that the 31 August deadline would not be changed and the Taliban would have attacked if he had changed his mind. BUT Wallace had enough time to approve the charter flight before that, but kept on blabbering nonsense about "people before pets". He is to blame if Pen, his staff and the animals die or are killed.

This is the most recent news I could find.

https://www.lbc.co.uk/news/pen-farthing-...l-airport/

Is there any chance all or some of the group can make it out? Is there any chance of getting Pen Farthing out?

I agree with you. It really looks like the failure of the rescue is the fault of Defense Secretary Wallace.
He must have okayed the rescue of a car. We all saw the pictures. Why not help the animal shelter staff. They need to get out and the animals would travel in their plane along with anyone else who could fit in. Their rescue does not prevent others from being rescued.
By failing to help Pen Farthing, the defense secretary is leaving one of his own military behind. That doesn't speak to highly of him as a defense secretary.

This just appeared in my news feed. I am afraid to believe that it is good news, but it could be.

There is still so much that could go wrong. All we can do is hope for the best.

I am wanting to believe that this is true, that the animals and Pen Farthing are on their way to safety.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article...GzDD4KQ5E8

I will fully believe it when we see pictures of him in a safe location.
Sadly his staff is still in danger. Who knows what will happen there.

These are the latest articles I have been able to find.

The animals are safe in the UK. Pen Farthing is safe. His people are still in danger.
A great many people are still in danger. This whole situation  has gone very badly.

I am sorry that not all the people could get out safely, but I am glad the animals were rescued.
Things would have ended badly for them if they had been left behind.

It seems this story is not over. Pen Farthing is still working to get his people out.
I hope he is able to do it.

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-essex-58420839

People who are criticizing him for bringing the animals out, but not the people, seem to think it was an either or situation.
It was fortunate he was able to get the animals out. Not rescuing the animals would not have helped the people left behind.
They might be better off with the animals already gone. Now all they have to focus on is their own safety.
We can only hope they make it to safety. The work they did for animals creates more danger for them now.
There are many people needing rescue, but these people have a special need.

The staff had permission to go with Pen, but the Taliban would not accept the documentation. So in the end, his workers insisted on his leaving with the animals. The only other alternative would have been for Pen and the animals to stay as well. The Taliban would not let the staff through.

They did what they had to. People running the shelter would have wanted the animals to be rescued.

I couldn't find any new information about the workers left behind. I guess they are working on permission to leave. I don't know if it is even possible for them to leave. If I find anything in the news I will post it.
