Fighting the illegal wildlife trade in Vietnam
#1
This is a complex issue and there is a real problem with the illegal wildlife trade in Vietnam. There are various groups involved in the issue, in particular the WWF and the Environmental Investigation Agency. There is someone who is making a real difference. Trang Nguyen is a young Vietnamese woman who founded Wildhand, a local conservation NGO. She has her PhD in Biodiversity management and works as a wildlife conservation scientist.
Wildhand runs training programs for young people and for rangers so they can work effectively in their local communities.
Empowering local people is an effective way to change things for the better for wildlife.  Vietnam has a long way to go in fighting the wildlife trade, progress is being made.

It is always encouraging to hear about people like Trang. She is making a difference by educating people directly and teaching them to act. She is a classic example of thinking globally and acting locally. She is reaching the young people who will grow up with new ideas. This will bring lasting change as the young people become the future of the country. She educates the rangers who are the local officials in preventing the wildlife trade. More effective rangers means more a effective fight against the wildlife trade. Yes Vietnam has a long way to go, but we know things are progressing because of the work of people like Trang.
There is definitely hope for the future when there are people Trang.
