The Little Brown Dog
#1
The little brown dog affair caused riots and protests in Britain in the 1900s.  A renowned Physiologist vivisected a little brown dog before a group of medical students and others, in public.  It triggered the outrage of the Anti-vivisectionist League. The case raged on and they even raised a memorial statue of the dog in Battersea, south London.  The statue was a focal point for protests from both sides of the issue. In the end it was removed in secret.

Author and animal activist, Paula S. Owen has written a novel about the story. It is called  The Little Brown Dog.
She is seeking to have the statue restored. Until that happens she has placed a model of the statue where it once stood.
She feels the story should not be forgotten.

What was done to the stray dog was not acceptable to many people back in the 1900s. It would not be acceptable now. The question is,  have we changed that much since the little brown dog's horrible death.  The death of a gentle Alpaca, Geronimo, says we haven't changed that much. Geronimo was part of a larger cull of animals suspected of Bovine TB.  There are many other cases of animal cruelty that still have some public support. Various hunting events are public acts of cruelty. I think the timing of the book is very good. I think the statue needs to be replaced to remind us of the animal cruelty were were and still are capable of.
