Three pregnant Orcas
#1
The Orca population off of western Canada, the southern resident population, or J pod has been in serious decline. It is with great joy that  scientists have announced that 3 of the females are pregnant. Even if there are still lots of ways this could go wrong (miscarriages, neonatal mortality), having three pregnancies in one year is incredibly hopeful. Some years there are no pregnancies. We can hope for all of them to survive, but we will be happy if any of them survive.

It is wonderful to have good news about J pod. They have struggled to survive. They have had loses. If they could have any healthy calves it will help with their survival. It also means they have enough healthy females to have three pregnancies.  Heart
