North Atlantic Right Whales listed as critically endangered
#1
The North Atlantic Right Whales have been struggling for years. Whaling depleted their numbers and they have not recovered.
Critically endangered means there are only 250 mature adults in a population of 400. There were a number of babies born this year, but one was found dead of a boat strike. As a species they are one step short of extinction. If we don't act to help them, they will be lost.
Their biggest problems are boat strikes and entanglement in "ghost gear", abandoned fishing gear. Sometimes whales can be rescued from entanglement, sometimes not. How many of them die out there from entanglement and no one knows about it.
The only hope is that their endangered status will motivate humans to act while there is still time.

This is an animal whose endangered status is definitely our fault. We hunted them almost to extinction. Our ocean going activities since then have impeded their recovery. Even the way we have treated the oceans and the damage climate change has caused, are all part of bringing the whales closer to extinction.
We have compromised their food supply. They have to seek other waters where they are not protected.
We have only one shot at saving them. If their numbers become too low, there will be no chance of recovery.
We all must do the right thing here or should I say the Right Whales thing.
