North America's first Whale Sanctuary is taking shape
#1
The whale sanctuary is being built in Nova Scotia. It will be able to handle 8 Beluga Whales. The will have 300 times the space that they have at a marine park.
Sadly they cannot be released to the wild because they would not know how to survive. At least in the sanctuary they will have room, a social group and actual sea water.
The sanctuary has opened its visitor and operations centre.  They hope to welcome their first whales in early 2023.

There are about 200 beluga whales and 50 orcas being held in Marine parks around the world, that we know about. This sanctuary is just the beginning. We need many more places where whales can live out their lives as close to nature as possible. In  time we will place most captive whales in sanctuaries.
It takes time to research an area and be sure that it is suitable. If we have the will to do it, whale sanctuaries are possible. There is already a whale sanctuary in southern Iceland.  I would love to see a day where there are no more captive whales, just a few old ones living in whale sanctuaries.
