A conservation site in Saskatchewan for shore birds
#1
The area around Chaplin Lake, Saskatchewan has now been declared a conservation site. It is a key rest/feeding point for migrating birds. It is also an essential area for birds like the sharp tailed grouse. Deer and moose inhabit the area as well. The 646 hectares of land preserve some essential grasslands that are unique to the prairie ecosystem and to the survival of migrating birds. Many birds migrate long distances. It is essential that we preserve their migration corridors.
The site is named Mackie Ranch after the people who had stewardship of the land.

Chaplin Lake is actually a salt lake, the second largest in Saskatchewan.

As you can see, this is a very unique lake and a very unusual habitat. It plays such a key role in the survival of migrating birds that protecting it was absolutely necessary. For the sake of the local birds and other wildlife it needed to be protected. The prairies are more complex ecologically than most people realize.
Prairie grasslands are actually complex ecosystems that sustain a lot of life. They are able to withstand the climate conditions and ride out the effects of drought and flooding cycles.
I am extremely happy to hear about this conservation site. I hope there are man more to follow.
