Case against animal rights activist dropped right before the trial
#1
Animal rights activist, Matt Johnson, was charged after he placed cameras in a Iowa Select  facility. The facility was doing a ventilator shut down to kill a barn full of pigs.

This article describes what a ventilator shutdown doers.

This is a brutal way to kill animals. It involves prolonged suffering and extreme emotional distress.

Getting a video and leaking it to the public had quite an impact. Iowa Select had to stop the practice immediately. That was a victory in itself.
What he did is against an Iowa  ag-gag law. He was charged and it was about to go to trial. The charges were suddenly dropped.
Why? Could it be that the video was evidence and would have had to be shown. Could it be that Iowa Select did not want the publicity.
Also if he won it would set a legal precedent.

One way or the other this is a victory. The trial would have exposed some brutal agricultural practices. Since Matt is free to go, he can go right back to his work as an animal activist. It is a small victory in a long battle against brutal farming methods. These methods didn't happen over night, so they won't be stopped over night. With people like Matt working tirelessly, they will one day be stopped. He made something horrible known to the public. They can no longer say they didn't know. Some people won't care, but many will.
