5 Bison killed by vehicles in Elk Island Park in Alberta
#1
Elk Island National park is an important conservation site for Bison. Vehicles are allowed to drive through the park. Increasingly they are not following speed limits or respecting the presence of the Bison. Five Bison were hit by a car. The same five were later hit by a truck. Three were killed outright and two more were so injured that they had to be euthanized. Three young females were killed, a young male and a middle aged male.
The loss of three young females is catastrophic.
This herd is helping repopulate other areas with Bison.

Bison once roamed the Prairies. Work is being done so they will roam the Prairies again. New herds are being established in a number of places.
The Bison from Elk Island are needed for the repopulation efforts. The story of this is told in a documentary called Singing Back the Buffalo.
It talks about the work being done to restore Bison herds all over their natural territory. I have seen the movie at a film festival. It is happening. The Bison are returning.

Losing five at once because of careless and reckless driving is tragic and definitely a reason to be angry.
Maybe they will have to close the roads through the park at least at certain times. Whatever it takes to protect the buffalo is what needs to be done.
